Our Story

From Passion to Adire Muse: This Is My Story.

My story so far

I began my journey as a fashion designer with a heart full of creativity and a dream to share my unique style with the worldTeaching fashion design and selling ready-to-wear garments was my passion, and in 2016, I created a design that changed everything. It went viral, earning me recognition and appreciation. However, there was a twist. The fabric I used was common, and before I knew it, others began replicating my design with low-quality materials, selling them at cheaper prices.

That experience was a wake-up call. I realized I needed to create something that no one else could replicate—starting with the very fabric itself. I embarked on a journey to learn fabric design and discovered the beautiful art of Adire, a traditional Nigerian textile craft.

As I continued teaching fashion design, something unexpected happened. My students began requesting Adire lessons. They were captivated by the intricate process and vibrant patterns, and I was more than happy to share my newfound skill. Alongside teaching, I enrolled in an international online training course, which sharpened my expertise and gave me a unique edge in my designs.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic—a time that forced many of us to adapt. With in-person classes on hold, I decided to create an online textile design training program. This move not only allowed me to connect with people across the globe but also showcased the fabrics I had designed for my ready-to-wear garments. Soon, people began asking if I sold these fabrics. At the time, I only made them for my clothing line, so I always said no.

Fast forward to December 2022. The raw garment business slowed down, and I found myself with an abundance of beautiful Adire fabrics. It felt like the perfect moment to pivot. I decided to sell the fabrics themselves, and that was how Adire Muse was born—a brand that celebrates the beauty and versatility of Adire fabrics.

Today, I, Oluwafunmilayo Akin-Ajayi, proudly create stunning art on Adire fabrics using carefully sourced materials. Each piece is a testament to my journey—rooted in tradition, creativity, and resilience. Through Adire Muse, I share this art with the world, inspiring others to embrace the beauty of handmade textiles.

This is not just my story; it is my legacy—a reminder that challenges can lead to reinvention, and passion, when nurtured, can transform into purpose.
